Some of the best books I have read has used other characters to show traits and characterisitc of the main characters. The subject and point of view can very, but what I hate is a story that is a typical storyline that offers no new plot or drawn out that you know what the end is and there are still 2 books to be published in the story. You should write about something that intrest you, while using litary techniques such as dialouge, flashbacks, and word choice to draw your reader in. If you are having trouble startinf I would suggest a free write exercise where you take 15 minutes and just write what ever comes into your head.

I would recommend writting your first book for you. Then focus on what others want. I myself like drama/thrillers like Clancy or Morrell. Ya know a little conspiracy theory with some killing and a wicked little twist.
Its never cheesy to do what you want to do, its our differences. I could not set down and write a book. However, I could fish until I passed out, wake up and fish some more. Somebody might call that cheesy, I call it my addiction..(there are worse things.)

a good topic and perfect plot. i always like to read a book which has an interesting love or thriller topic and fast plot (slow plot will make me put the book down, really).
