I am making a jean quilt and am wondering what size I need to make it for a queen bed.

Standard size of a queen size quilt in the batting industry is 90" x 108". Anything close but not over is considered a queen size. King is 120" x 120". Those are standard size of pre-cut batting NOT what retailers are calling queen or king.

I own a quilt shop & that's my reference.

First, measure the top of the bed from head to foot & side to side. Decide how much of a drop down the sides you want the quilt to hang. The norms are 10" per side drop, 12" or 18". The drop down the foot of the bed can be the same or different, whatever suits you. I usually add 4 to 6" at the head of the bed to tuck the quilt down under the head of the bed.

With some beds having very tall mattresses & or box springs(up to 18"), some beds having no box spring (platform beds), you need to know exactly the bed size you wish to cover and whether you want the quilt to meet the box springs or overhang it slightly, depending on whether a dust ruffle is used to cover the box springs. That's why there is so much variability in the size of the quilt.
