I am thinking that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
If you don't feel the need to upgrade, why spend the money replacing it? Adding a laptop to your menagerie is fine, but no need to ditch the old desktop.
The cost of anti virus shouldn't matter, you can download AVG for free.

base on what u say, that u only use compuer for light processing then replacing them only when they are spoilt sounds reasonable, to be exact 4-6 years is ok for ur condition as light usage of the computer don't need new end graphic card, processing speeds
unless u are hardcore and rich gamer, they buy 1-2 year once or sometimes even when new stuff comes out
antivirus expiring is not a problem, get a free antivirus, its absolutely free no trick, no scam try to search for Avast home, or AVG they provide free anti virus, its better than nothing
but if u insist on getting the new pc for a new look or a change then i think u deserve it urself

Based on your question, I don't think you really need to buy another computer or laptop. If you know how to upgrade your existing computer, then it's a lot cheaper to do it. Check how much memory does your system have, most system will allow you to upgrade to 2 gigabytes of memory. The price of a memory chip has dropped very sharply over the last year. Another way to really speed up your system is to re-install Windows completely, but save all your important files first!! Re-install Windows will wipe out all the junk files, cookies, spy-ware, etc..
Just in case if you not sure how to check much memory your system has, right click on "My Computer" and move the cursor down and click on "properties". It should tell you how much memory right there. Make sure you buy the right kind of memory to match your computer. NOT ALL MEMORY CHIPS ARE THE SAME.
To re-install Windows, read your computer owner's manual.
Finally, Anti-virus is a waste of money. Just use your common sense when surfing the Internet..don't download files that you don't know, don't open junk mails, especially attachments and direct links, don't install unknown files.......well, you know what I mean?

Since your only using it for word processing and stuff you should be good for several more years. But if you are going to continue to use it on the internet I would suggest paying to keep the antivirus software. Yeah it cost money but it works.

Absolutely agree, viruses aren't a threat if you follow one simple rule: don't open what you don't know.
As for spyware, that's a completely different matter, but if your browsing experience is focused to the right places you are safe there, too

Actually, I'd say three years is just about right, in terms of new techologies and new software. Presuming you can afford a new machine, I say go for it.
Enjoy!

I don't think you Have to upgrade your PC as you use it for basic stuff only. But, if your computer runs slow, you can upgrade your ram to 512mb.
