Overrated? It's far gone beyond that point. It shouldn't be rated it all. IT SUCKS. This is hardly anything new though. MTV has been slowly going downhill since the the end of the 80's. Of course now it has tumbled to the bottom of the mountain with a reality TV driven lineup designed for teenagers and the mentally disabled. Why they continue to have the M in MTV is a mystery to me because there barely is any music on that channel. Also, MTV never killed bands like FOB. FOB would have sucked just as bad by virtue that they are a spineless wuss band with very little talent.

Back then in the 80s and early 90s, MTV helped spawn the popularity of a lot of bands/artists like Guns N' Roses, U2, Aerosmith, Green Day, and Nirvana. It was big and helped bring new music into the mainstream. But then, the station got caucky, and began to load up reality shows not dealing with music anymore. And recently, they just snobbed rock completely. Did you see the VMAs? It was terrible. Too much hype over a washed-up pop star...all songs for best video were pop/hip-hop, and there was no focus on videos.
Thanks to youtube and the internet, we can get decent music now. MTV will probably rot to hell and maybe even end operations in the upcoming years. TRL is not even live anymore, viewership is down, and everyone criticizes it these days.
Thank god for the internets!

As far as I know, the only die hard fans of MTV are about 14 and under.. MTV's main fanbase are kids just getting into music and they are amazed by what they see... little do they know that that's not the good music in the world. At this point MTV doesn't even play videos anymore, except for in the middle of the night. Their current TV shows are horrendous, they've had some good shows in the past but these new ones are just vile. So yes it is over rated by the younger group, most adults hate it.

By who?
Because during the last 20 years, I haven't heard someone praise MTV, who didn't work for MTV. The standard is for people to criticize MTV and mention they don't play music anymore. This is a rant as out of date as the "Paul McCartney had a band before Wings?" joke at this point.

MTV has successfully taken it's reputation and flushed it down the toilet. What a joke that station is. Hmm sure if you are 12 you think it's cool but anyone over that age knows what a farce they have become.
To say it is overrated is slight understatement! It has nothing to do with real music and all to do with teenage demographic.
BTW there are FAR better bands than Fall Out Boy out there!

That's an understatement. Nobody over the age of 13 takes MTV seriously anymore. Anybody who thinks that's the source of good music is a chump. What does the M stand for, anyways? It surely can't stand for music.
Btw, Fallout Boy was DOA

MTV is highly overrated and on the rare occasion they actually play music it's overplayed, bad, trendy pop or rap. There's absolutely no variety and very little talent in what they have taken to playing.

I have two teenage daughters who never watch it. They are in the age group MTV is aimed at. They say it's filled with stupid reality programs and on the rare occasion it plays videos, those videos aren't of the type of music they like.

MTV was groundbreaking and edgy when they stared, and actually showed videos. Then they stopped showing videos, and replaced them with shows about partying on the beach, and a bunch of other worthlessness. Now, they're just another waste of tv time.

MTV SUCKS... All of their shows are like 3 girls who are best friends and they always talk about their boyfriends, so boring... And yes, they do kill some bands and they put talentless bands and leave the public believing it that bands like "MCR, FOB, etc." is true rock music.
