Depending on the weather and the expected conditions, my clothing varies from the basic bifocals, jeans, T shirt and work boots to adding any or all of the following:
long sleeve shirt,
Thermal underwear (1 or 2 sets),
sweatpants,
wool sweater,
jacket (used to be leather, now textile with armor),
leather chaps or Wall's blizzard-pruf overalls,
glove liners or mechanics gloves,
leather gloves,
balaclava,
wool scarf,
and a helmet (either a 3/4 or a full face).
Almost forgot the rain pants.
Special gear? It's all casual clothes.
That list is one reason I need saddlebags.

Most often: Shoei RF900 full face helmet (due for replacement soon), Joe Rocket leather jacket, Alpinestars SP-2 leather gloves, Carhartt jeans, and Sidi Vertebra boots.
NEVER LESS THAN THAT!
If I'm going into the canyons or wanting to *ahem* not follow the speed limit, I trade my jeans for Teknic leather track pants and Teknic Speedstar race gloves.
I have crashed before, and was VERY glad to have been wearing the right gear. It meant I had almost zero downtime, and I was back to work the next day with only a few bruises.

It's been a while since I had a bike but I would wear a long sleeve shirt and an undershirt, denim jeans, and a helmet. I have dropped a couple of bikes, due to mechanical errors and I was very glad to have had the helmet on.
Try not to have a lot of bare skin showing, the asphalt is mighty hard when bare skin hits it. I know.

Full-face helmet with a DOT sticker and a "snell" rating.
Leather gloves.
That's about it for special gear. I need to get a leather jacket, and should probably get boots too.
I wear jeans, denim jacket, t-shirt, sneakers.

a helmet and bike clothes, light weight, not dragging. Safe clothing, reflective maybe. They sell some really cool biking shirts for like two hundred dollars or more, you can get sponsors. And you can wear special gripping shoes, i saw some really great ones advertised in a climbing magazine, supposedly you can walk on slimed rocks and you still will not slip. Also you could wear neck and back braces, with arm and leg extensions (that would be smart).

Gloves, boots, riding jacket with armor and a full face helmet.
Riding pants in cool weather, equipped with knee sliders for corner carving. Cold and cool weather riding I add a neck warmer and layered clothing under my riding gear.
