There are so many wonderful animals alive already in pounds and shelters that need good homes. Pet stores and puppy mills exist because people think they must raise a puppy. They keep the animals in horrible conditions and don't give them adequate food nor health care. The make the little mothers into baby factories until they have no nutrients left in their little bodies. Puppies are not only difficult to raise for someone who has never had a pet, but older dogs may already be trained. You will feel so good to know that you have saved a life if you adopt an older dog from a pound or shelter, and it will discourage the rotten puppy mill owners from breeding more and more cute little puppies, if people realize this. There are many older dogs that people have to give up for various reasons (ie elderly people with health problems, people moving into apartments that don't allow them to keep their pets) who are great and loving companions that deserve a chance to live.

On top of all the other reasons listed concerning the treatment of pet store animals, here's another reason: there are literally thousands of animals in shelters waiting to be adopted. Not just cats and dogs, either: everything from rodents to reptiles to farm animals wind up in shelters, you just have to know which shelters to visit. These animals will be killed if nobody adopts them. That's not true with pet stores. Most stores will either keep the animals until sold or put them back into the pet mills to breed.

Most pets that you get from the pet store come from "Mills" were they mass bread animals and keep them in cages. The conditions are really bad, and most of the animals are sick. The other thing is that because they are kept in these conditions for the first part of there life they are more prone to behavioral issues. The most important thing though is that they were not handled by humans when they were born. Causing all kinds of behavioral issues.

Now I'm not saying that all animals at the pet store were breed in Mills... But how are you going to know?

Not all pet stores have standards and regulations. Some can be very unsanitary and unsafe for the pets. Unfortunately, the exact same can be said of private sources.
I do not have a problem buying from commercial pet stores. I judge each store on it's own merits.

Becasue there are so many animals being out down in pounds and shelters. by buying an animal from the pet shop not only are you letting a pet die in the shelter but also you encourage breeders to breed more animals. All animals from pet shops are from breeders. Also pet shops usually keep their animals there until sold and breeders will breed according to the demand in the pet shops.

I've actually heard that "cream of the crop" or litter I should say, is picked out from the breeders and sold or bred by them. The rest are sold to pet shops. I'm sure some "high end' pet shops do have healthier puppies, but you just never know. Always check their medical history before buying. I actually bought my puppy at a high end pet shop - full medical history, including surgery she had. She was pretty expensive too, but well worth it. But nothing was wrong with her, except for a minor inguinal hernia surgery she had. Still, she is GREAT!! Healthy, active, loveable, friendly, and adorably cute.

Cats and dogs from pet stores often have hidden health or mental problems due to poor breeding or poor conditions prior to arrival. Poor conditions for the mother dog means poor brain development in her puppies as well as problems with organ development. Virtually every dog owner I know that had bought their dog at a pet store had one or the other problem.

If you are looking to buy for yourself you are going to want the best pet possible. Pets, like people have better adult lives if they have a stable child hood. A pet that is in a shop is most likely to have had less attention from being locked away not to mention taunted by shoppers.

It is just something to think about when buying from a pet store.

Cause they get their dogs from puppymills and backyard breeders.. It's a known fact.. Legitimate responsible breeders would never ever allow their puppies / dogs to be sold in a petstore.. Just plain does not happen. No matter what some people try to tell you, dogs from local breeders etc.. It is NOT true.. NO breeder worth anything would ever sell or allow their dogs to be sold thru a petstore.

1. Expensive
2. Sick
3. Weak

These are the usual thing you find in the petstore. It's best to buy direct from the breeder.
