My boyfriend and I will be traveling Europe next summer and we plan on visiting Spain. I want to see Barcelona, but because it's so close to the beach, I'm wondering if I should book a hotel that is on the beach (which we would love), and then take day trips to Barcelona, or should we book a hotel in the center of Barcelona and visit the beach? It's a hard decision, and we like to party so maybe that will play a role in deciding. I want to experience the nightlife in Barcelona, but if our hotel is by the beach, it might make it harder to have to travel back really late. I don't know, but any advice would be appreciated since I have never been to Spain. Thanks!!

I was in Barcelona in the summer of 2005. Me and my friends stayed at some hotel on Las Ramblas, which is the main street full of street entertainers and nightlife and shops everywhere (the link below will give you a bit more info about it). I highly recommend staying here as it is the heart of everything that a couple would want to do. I would guess it was about a 15-20 minute walk to the beach, but the walk is very pretty and worth the walk. Las ramblas also has plenty of bars and nightclubs and many fine places to eat lunch and dinner at. Let me know if you want more details

Hi
I am thinking that you do not realise perhaps that the main central IS already within walking distance of the beach!!!
If you book a hotel or an apartment rental (can be cheaper than a hotel and companies such as http://www.holiday-velvet.com organise rentals) and if you stay somewhere near Las Ramblas or Barri Gotic then you will be right where all the bars, restaurants and shops are. And you will be 10-15 minutes walk from the beach.

It really IS NOT neccesary to choose centre or beach as you might as well stay where you can do both. The nightclubs etc also are on the beach front so staying neat La Rambla or Barri Gotic will be perfect. The beach, the centre and clubs are all within walking distance of each other.

Stay around the ramblas area, and visit the beach, it is walking distance, to the bottom of the ramblas and take a left, keep going the beach is on the right. Or get a taxi.
