It is not that it is lacking, just starting to take a back seat. Anime fans started out liking anime because of the story, original characters as well as the art style. The best anime may not be the best sellers these days. Story has taken a back seat to action these days. There are many great shows that have gone out of US print these days, Bubblegum Crosses, Ranma, Lodoss Wars, Orange Rode, Gundam were all about characters and a look, in a sci-fi setting, at the human condition, ourselves, in a way we can care about them. The best anime is a visual book. Anime seems on the road to easy short cuts for ratings and sales.
There is also a change in the demographics, females make up a much larger share of anime buying than when anime started out. So some of the best shows may be hitting a different audience from when anime started to become popular here.
Those is my thoughts.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo! need subs.
School Days needs episode 12 instead of Nice Boat. I can't believe they didn't air it, and all because of that stupid girl.
That's about all I can think of right now. I would be interested to know what kind of titles you are interested in. As you can see, I like some of the less well known stuff, and I'm not really a fan of Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha and the like (one reason is because of the complaints issued above- lack of resolution). There are a lot of anime of all kinds of different flavors out there. If you search hard enough, you will be able to digg up some real gems that you enjoy (even though others may not).
I just find it hard to group all of anime, and say what is inadequate about it because anime includes everything from Pokemon to Death Note. The only thing I can think of is that maybe you believe anime hasn't filled up some niche genre that you would really enjoy. I can't really think of any, though, because I am pretty satisfied with the series that I am able to find, watch, and enjoy.
What about you? What would you like to see happening in anime?

I watch a lot of anime. I think they need to work on the story lines. Sometimes the y have a good concept but after a fe episode it completely mess up, make you lose interest. there are also the ones you watch gladly till the last 3 episode f@%# up the whole thing, and make you feel that you wasted your time.

animes need more realistic eyes and hairdos. im sick of characters whose only distinguishing traits are goggles and pink hair. a really really really good/developed character (like yagami light) doesnt need an extreme appearance.
a good storyline can support even a crazy premise, it all depends on the viewers really... but id prefer more realistic events.
and also! any anime without schoolgirls suddenly fainting to move a plot along scores extra points in my book. :P seriously, that plot bit is overused. (escaflowne is an exception, because it's my fave anime of all time)

Anime is lacking better anime artists(less big eyes, and round faces),and stories(pika, pika, pikachu,c'mon). Plus all the hairdo's look like explosions, or very sharp and dangerous to touch lest you cut yourself. Legend of the overfiend is good, less the sex crap.

What i think a lot of anime is lacking is closure. they just seem to drift away rather than really come to an end

to draw the characters so that they look more realistic and better rational story lines. So of the story lines are really bad especially those with a lousy ending
