I don't get how knowing what the Atztecs are will help me in my future (i mean thats what school is for)....And most people foget it in a year anyway... so WHAT'S THE POINT OF SOCIAL SCIENCE? O and same thing with langitude and longitude.... it's not like im going to search off for another country that doesn't exist.... (:

I would rather have a class that has a point.

II'm not sure what your social studies is being taught to you; in later life you may be able to make a difference. I'm not sure of the curriculum of your social science class, but I have a Master's degree in that field. My degree encompasses psychology, social behavior and why people think the way that they do. This assists one in helping others with behavior and allows one to asses the progress of persons with problems that they cannot decide for themselves. It also allows one to search their own behavioral patterns which can include family, social behavior and stress related situations.

This is not something that one will forget in a year as you state. Geometry; yes that is something to be forgotten unless used in a practical sense. However, social behavior is something that we all experience on a regular basis.

Relating to your comment that history does not repeat itself is not entirely accurate. The Pharaohs of ancient Egypt were in effect dictators or monarchs of their time; seen as supreme rulers. We see this now with Cuba, China and sadly the president of the United States, just to name a few. The former monarchs of Great Britain are another example of supreme rule. It was only changed by historical facts and politics that in their case the royal rule was changed due to the politics of the church and modernization.

While I agree with you to a point, the importance of social behavior and history is important because if that if in the course of future history by learning from mistakes of those who came before you.

Your class does have a point. If you do not know what happened in history, you would not know how to correct those errors or form your own opinions on how the future should be addressed, based upon such history. Think about the multitude of people who were burned as witches in 1692 and those who were beheaded in France (Marie Antoinette) and England (Anne Boleyn) for treason in that they were innocent. We have learned from that history that those practices are unacceptable.

If no one told you about these instances, you would not know about them. The Aztecs murdered many people simply because they thought it would give them a good harvest or be in favor with their "gods". This is where history is important. It allows us to reflect upon what a civilization thought at the time and why we now do not subscribe to them now.

More currently, there was a time where blacks and whites did not share the same space. Now we have legislation prohibiting discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Now we have bi-racial marriages and states that are either for or against gay rights, which is also a form of discrimination. In time, that issue will be resolved also. But it will take the next generation to make that happen. You must know the course of past history in order to progress into a more fair and logical course of action for the current.

Trust me; your time is not wasted in this class. If you retain the knowledge presented to you and structure it in a time line, you will see that both history does repeat itself, as well as the opportunity to change that direction.

Social interaction is social science...and history. Ask the Aztecs how they felt about Cortes. Why one society felt they were better than another. Or ask a "protester" from the 60's (your parents, maybe?) how they felt about Johnson & Nixon and the Vietnam War or Kent State.

Or ask a Jew with a number tatooed on their forearm about Hitler's "master plan" and why they were beneath other people...just like you feel Social Science is beneath you.

You're absolutely right, all history is anyway is a set of *constantly changing* agreed upon lies. History should be in a trade school only, being as the average person forgets most of it anyway. Why not cut down drastically the amount of time spent teaching it, and dedicate that same time to more USEFUL subjects that the real world requires, as you said?

We study history to praise great men and women of the past for their actions.....but I'm not sure how the Aztecs fit into that...

history helps you to understand and better know yours, and others countries. you know its history, how its changed and came to be the way it is today. it helps you with many things, like science, and even law. and its latitude not langitude. latitude and longitude help with direction and they tell you where you are.

Did you feel the same way about spelling? If you hate school, don't learn. Being stupid is a fair reward for laziness. By the way, most history DOES repeat itself. If we don't learn lessons from the past, then the bad guys get us every time. Duh.
