This happens to me all the time. After researching and taking classes I've come to a conclusion.
Many of the actions we perform in our everyday life are done autonomously or without thinking about it. Driving home is done this way. This is why after driving home and listening to music you don't remember the ride home... even though you were the driver.
However, after something happens that is not routine or something appears out of place we are forced to pay closer attention and regain control of all our functions. If this happens at a point it has never happened before we are unfamiliar with the place and surroundings as we have never gathered substantial information about it.
Another theory I have is that something called dark matter (that scientists say holds the universe together) can bend time to some degree... or rather make light and sound and other senses take time to reach us and therefore appear as though something strange just occurred.

Oh yeah, *nods*. There are many times I have driven down a long road and it's been a road that I have driven hundreds of times and suddenly I think that I have missed a turn some where and have gotten lost. I just keep driving until I hit something that looks more familiear and can re-orient myself. I think we have ALL done that at some point in our lives. It sure unnerves one, doesn't it? Scares the crap out of me. I wonder if I haven't come down with instant Alzheimers or something, LOL

yes. when I fell over backward and boke my ribs and suffered a concussion and was unconscious. I was alone, and when I came to and was only half aware of my surroundings for some very long and very bloody minutes. Head injuries in which you smash an artery sure do bleed a lot.
