as a general rule, yes..
desktops tend to be faster overall because
a) new components come out for desktops first..
b) concessions have to be made for the heat cutting edge parts tend to generate and the power they consume
c) while this has improved in recent years, laptops still aren't nearly as upgradeable component for component as a desktop is..
granted, a laptop can be every bit as fast as a desktop.. but because of the cramped space of a laptops insides, the laptop will cost considerably more.. (example, you might very well be able to find a quad core laptop with SLI videocards.. but the battery life on said laptop would be what.. 30-35 minutes tops.. and it would be about $600 more than a desktop equipped about the same)

Well it depends. Desktops hold more technological features and can also be upgraded unlike laptops. Laptops are still high tech computers but unlike desktops, cannot be upgraded for certain parts of the computer.
Laptops however are mobile computers so in some sense, it really depends on what your needs are. If you plan to continually move your computer with work data and information, laptops are the best way to go.
But if you are looking for a hardcore gaming computer that has a big harddrive for music and photos, then it's best to stick with the desktop. Both virtually have their pro's and con's, but the desktop is by far a better computer to have.

In general, desktops are more powerful options for several reasons:
1) They don't have cut-down versions of the CPU or Video Card
2) Laptops are tailored to preserve battery life, which results in "speedstepping". Speedstepping lowers the speed of the CPU and turns devices off when they're idle. This can cause slight pauses when the system wakes up or gets back to full speed.
3) Desktops can be upgraded easily which extends their lifespan. Laptops can easily get out of date after just 2-3 years.
4) I'm going to hit home on the video card again, which is extremely important to gamers. The best ones out there are in desktops, and this is the most important piece to upgrade in a desktop when it comes to gaming and staying current. You just can't get that kind of option from any laptop.
_______________
Bottom line: You get the laptop for mobility, convenience, and bragging rights. You get the desktop for raw power, lower cost and reliability

No, Desktops last longer then 5 years, and laptops heat up more and have more problems. Laptops you can't upgrade either. Laptops also can't upgrade the video card, and you can't upgrade the memory very much either. You save money in the end by getting

Well i would say that desktops are better, because you have ethe option of upgrading your system vice versa with laptops you really don't have that option. Another problem is the heat buildup laptops build up heat really fast and have a problem dissapting it and desktops don't have that problem depending on what kind of cae you have.

It depends on the purpose you intend to use it for. In general Gaming computers are definitely desktop computers. Graphic intense computers are generally desktop computers. Laptops are generally for mobility, if nothing else.

Try to have one of both, I always tell everyone.
Soemtimes you need to bring a computer ob the road while travelling.
The desktop is too chunky and heavy but it is more ccomfortable to work on. You have a numeric pad for one.

desktops are better because you can customize it and upgrade it as time and technology progresses. it offers much more computing capabilities than laptops because they can adapt and be upgraded with add on cards.
laptops excel in mobile computing. if you're always away, traveling and such, of course you can't have a bulky desktop as your luggage.

Desktops are gradually becoming obsolete as technology improves. DTs are becoming smaller with thinner screens.
