memory is the key factor here... and why you cannot retain what you learn.

Quit memorizing and actually try to understand.

I havent "memorized" a single thing in math in twenty years. Im a 27 year old math major.

Memorization is wrong, conceptual understanding... true comprehension... is irreplaceable and key to success in math (as well as most other subjects)

More complex concepts build on less complex concepts. If you dont understand the basics, you wont understand the more complex things. Take it one concept at a time.

Practice doesnt make perfect. All the practice in the world is meaningless if you never understand what youre doing and why youre doing it.

You need to ask the "whys" at every little caveat. I have fun with math... and my interest peaks... as I actually try to prove, for myself, all the theorems and rules that teachers teach. Instead of taking them at their word, I try to illustrate to myself why its true. And I have fun challenging myself to find my own proof. I have proven most all rules on my own.

Memorizing rules wont help you to solve a problem in any given situation. You have to be able to conceptualize and comprehend the problem... so that you can create your own way of solving it.

Math is an art. Every mathematician has his own way of solving a problem... and there are many ways. Every individual that imagines a method of a solution is using his imagination. The rules must be followed... but there is no defined procedure. Its a matter of creativity.

A true understanding will help you circumvent all the confusion from subtleties of problems. Solutions and methods and the rules of math will come to you intuitively, as an inherent fact... and not just one of many rules you had to search for in a database of facts, randomly and aimlessly trying one thing or the next.

Anyone who would argue otherwise is undoubtedly the type that has had continuous problems learning math.

I havent had to memorize in twenty years. I HAVE gone an entire six years without challenging my math skills or learning or practicing... and I got right back into it without skipping a beat. I have never had to study. I dont need to do homework for practice. I just need to listen intently to lecture... and I have the stuff for life.

I havent always been that way though. When I was a kid I sucked at math and almost failed out of third grade because of it. I was memorizing and I wasnt grasping the point of it all. It wasnt until I realized reason, purpose, that it came to me flawlessly. When I started seeking concept and not fact, my skills skyrocketed.

I think Cogito is right. Math is far too complex to memorize enought to be of much use. But if you come to understand it, you will find remembering it is easy. Just take it one concept at a time.

Math is a subject of memory and every meomory even its a computer memory or human memory needs to be refresh after certain time....the best way to keep your memory active is practicing your skills. you should practice your math equations as much as you can because "PRACTICE MAKES THE MAN PERFECT."

we are all like that. but the less we like something the harder it is to remember or retain. especially things we don't use on a daily basis. but yahoo answers is cool like that. you can ask, answer and discover. buy a used calc and algebra book and when you come across something you don't remember look it up. math is like riding bike the know is there you just got to practice.

Hehehe. It's like anything else..... Use it or lose it ☺ There are times when I have to dig out an old reference book to find out the exact form of a derivative or integral. And I used to --teach-- that stuff ☺
