I heard synthetic oil is best but does it improve gas mileage and engine performance? also, I drive a 99 sunfire coupe so which oil weight would be best for mileage and performance? (10w-30, 10w-40, 5w-30, etc..)

if i were you id run a good Mobil one synthetic oil in it,use a 10-w-30 weight in it for all year round use,and you will see a small improvement in gas mileage as long as the engine is in good shape,it will also help protect the engine from harmful dirt that usually makes one wear out,and it will add life to the engine,i use that in about everything i own and so far i haven't had any problems from it at all,id have to say right now its probably the best oil on the market, good luck with it.

a standard oil for just about any car is a 10w-30,40. unless you plan on driving in the desert or going for a race up in Alaska, it should work perfectly. But synthetic oil wont necessarily improve gas/performance, but it is a more organized blend of hydrocarbons, so you wont get as many sludge deposits, and it lasts much longer, so you might only have to change your oil once every 8, 12, or even 15 thousand miles! Be sure to change your filter though and check your levels! Oil is the blood in your cars veins!

Mobile 1 gave me a 3 mpg increase.
Make sure you get an extended life filter too.
Stick with the manufactures recommendation, this will be determined to some degree on the max and min temp in your area.
If you are going to be subject to extreme lows use the 5W grades at the low end. If there are extreme high temps in your area get a 40 or better for the upper end.

Use synethic oil if you want. Or any good petrolium base oil as long it is exactly what the owners manual says to use for average tempature in your area of the country. KEY WORDS owners manual..... And the weight of the oil is of upmost importance! 5wt/30wt is a 5 weight oil that has additives that protect like 30wt when the oil heats up. 5wt oil also saves gas by being thin and easily pumped by your motor. However heat like in Texas 5wt might make for a more noisy motor consult your oil chart 10wt or even 15wt might be a better choice. The thing that makes motors last is good lubrication frequent oil changes on-time and keeping dirt out of the motor by replacing air filters too. Are $5.00 a quart oils better yes but if your engine leaks synethic oil will leak out faster.

I believe the owners manual calls for 5w-30 As far as synthetic goes it depends on your wallet. I have used it and really see no difference in anything to justify the extra expense.
