No, I don't think the school system here is making kids stupid. However, we are lagging behind other countries as far as strictness and general policy goes. A majority of the "stupidness" comes from lazy kids who don't want to do their homework, or just aren't motivated in class.

I totally agree with Renn! Children are very capable of comprehending all the material that is taught. We as a nation have got to stop babying our students. This includes even Special Ed students. They especially can do more than we expect. I taught inclusion classes and know this for a fact. Their parents want them in regular ed classes but want special treatment. That's not what inclusion is all about. They should be taught the same stuff with extra help. All our children can learn all that the educators can dish out if parents kept out of the teacher's way and let them teach! Yes, they need to be involved but not in the way many are . They need to support what the teacher does, to learn the curriculum, support and encourage their child to respect the teacher etc. Many parents complain about teachers 'cause they think they are too "hard" and give too much homework. Actually, the real reason they don't like the work is 'cause they will have to help their child with it and actually spend time with their child doing the assignment. Oh, they will do it but hate every minute of it. This attitude rubs off on the student and they bring the attitude to the class room with them the next day. They end up being discipline problems and the the parent says the teacher is picking on their child! American parents need to accept what the educational expectations are and grow up if our children are to succeed!

The fact is that children are expected to know more than they were years ago because studies show that hey are able to comprehend the material. They are not just "expected to know" the information, they are TAUGHT it. If anything it is making America's youth more advanced.

AND, to respond to those that seem to think that No Child Left Behind requires that school systems "lower the bar," it's quite the opposite. Expecations are actually higher because of it.
Frankly, I am tired of parents/relatives attacking America's public school system because their children aren't excelling as highly as their peers. There are children that can handle the expectations... and you know what... it's because of the support of parents that allow them to do so.
Educators are doing the best that they can. They are in the profession for a reason and we need all of the support that we can get.

Yes, America's school systems are going around bashing in students heads to hinder their abilities to learn and feeding them drugs that lower IQ.

No, America's school systems don't make people stupid. They don't make kids stupid, they just simply don't do much to educate or increase students' knowledge bases. They definatley aren't up to par with some other countries in terms of level of education and quality of education. Unfortunately, in the United States the emphasis seems to be on lowering the bar to let everyone meet it instead of encouraging (and perhaps pushing or forcing) students to reach up to that bar. It's that stupid "no child left behind" policy. Instead of demanding excellence and doing everything they can to help the students meet that demand, they are just lowering their standards so everyone passes.

Not sure if this is a real question because of the grammar and punctuation...

It's not the teachers. ..it is the school board, the politicians and the No Child Left Behind.

Who cares if the standards are higher??? If it is not where the kids are and they are not "really learning", what difference does it make!

Because if you could get the facts right, its Republican's that sue McDonalds and Republican's that want to take money away from our schools to make kids stupid.

Yes. The standards are set too high. All anyone cares about is grades anymore. In my honors classes I hear everyone always talking about all this nonsense. I think everyone is pushing the kids too hard. It was much easier in the past, but those people now control the schools, it all comes down to numbers. It's always some god damn statistic. Argh!
