Led Zeppelin---each member a superstar in their own right!

Led Zeppelin. They came onto the scene with a hard core rock and roll style that hadn't been heard outside of a few local fizzle bands like Blue Cheer. Their first album, nearly every song kicked a$$. And when everyone had LZ labeled as a hard rockin band, their next album mellowed out. Every album changed it's style and reinvented the band, much as the Beatles had done 10 years earlier. You can still put on any song from any LZ album and rock out to it. Most bands of the era when you hear their music, you think 'oh yeah they WERE good'. LZ is still good.

The Rolling Stones are good competitors. They've got Keith Richards, a guy who's a genius at creating riffs. I've heard "Day Tripper" by the Beatles was composed by John Lennon in an attempt to beat the riff in "Satisfaction". Then they have Mick Jagger, who's a great lyricist and has a great voice, a competitor for one of the greatest frontmen of all time. Then we also have some great lead guitarists, in particular Mick Taylor, who contributed on some of the Rolling Stones's most well-known and critically acclaimed records. Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts kept a perfect rhythm and are both great as a bassist and drummer, respectively. With songs like "Satisfaction", "Sympathy For The Devil", "Start Me Up", "Time Waits For No One", etc., very few bands can beat them.

Other bands include The Who and Led Zeppelin. Possibly the Beach Boys too...

The Beatles were always a part of the Great "British" Trilogy of bands, and a documentary put it the best way I've ever heard. If The Beatles were about "Love," The Rolling Stones were about "Sex" and The Who was about "Rage."

Elvis Costello and the Attractions in my opinion are the best rock band other than the Beatles. Elvis Costello is a fantastic song writer and the Attractions where a fantastic backing band.

The Animals.

Why? How about House of the Rising Sun? Plus many more, but that is the only song most people know.

The Beach Boys (at least through 1985). Stellar harmony, great melodies, and pretty darn consistent output.
