i'm looking for a deep muscle car sound for my mustang and i was wondering what the difference between a dual chamber and single chamber muffler was, and which one will give me the deep sound i'm looking for. i'm also free to suggestions on what will give me a better sound WITHOUT spending over 200-300 dollars.

Open to any suggestions and thanks in advance!

Double chamber would be a typical muffler that is designd for best noise supression. The exhaust pipe comes in from the engine or catalytic convertor and then it passes through a few baffles and then exits the tail pipe, often through an internal pipe that is full of holes or perforations.

Single chamber is less restrictive and allows faster expulsion of exhaust gasses. The pipe comes in and the exhaust gases jump from the incoming pipe to the outgoing pipe without running through any baffles.

Most of the pipes or tubes inside the mufflers are perforated and the exhaust gases have to exit through these holes and then re-enter other holes to exit. The muffler is essentially a silencer, expansion chamber, and flash arrestor although on cars with cat convertors the flash would first hit the the cat convertor.

Everything is happening so quickly when the engine is running that the exhaust valve opens while there is still fuel air mix/gases burning even though the piston has been driven down. This allows the piston to come up and force the gases out through the exhaust port around the valve.

If you run headers on an engine you can hear this process in greater detail and if you leave the exhaust pipes off and start the engine at night you will see some serious flames shoot out.

You can spend less than $100 to get a decent set of rumbling mufflers. I like the ones they stock at AutoZone and they give that T-Rex walking through the jungle noise when idleing.

Good Luck!

the difference between the number of chambers is how many zig zags the exhaust gases must go through. a single chamber muffler is the loudest, but i do not think that anyone really makes them any more. If you want a great deep sound go with the flowmaster super 40 series, that is if you have a v8. I got them put on my truck for 250 dollars for everything including install. They are not crazy loud, but they have a great deep rumble that is great to listen to. I have a 350ci motor, i can only imagine what they sound like on a big block

Well, Single chambers will give you a real loud sound, mainly used for race, dual will still give you an agressive sound. I bought my brother a Flowmaster 40 series exhaust system for his 68 camaro, and even with a small block in it, that thing rumbles. Depending on if your into names or not, I've been told that if you want the great agressive sound and a little performance go for Flowmaster, if you want a deep sound and added performance go with magnaflow. Just went on line and the price betwen the two are pretty close, bout 70-90 bucks each, just for the muffler. My bro's system cost me $300 from summit racing. Also if you go with summit racing or JEGS, they offer free shipping anywhere in the US, go online and get ya a free catalog. Hope that helps ya
