Jason, I think the primary reason men joined up early in the War (or, more accurately, in the run up to the War) was for love of Country. They, too, were disgusted with conditions in Germany as a result of the Versailles Treaty. They had a good job, food, income, housing - and I'll agree - those uniforms were dashing!
As the War actually started and then wore on - the "incentive" was a bullet in the back of the neck.
Hitler had also indoctrinated the people so effectively that 8 year old kids were throwing themselves in front of tanks.
Lots of medals is also true - EVERYBODY had a chestful.

Whores. They imported women from several countries, and kept them in whorehouses, to serve the troops wether they wanted to or not. After the war they were not welcomed back to their homes, so became displaced persons, or killed
themselves.

their uniforms were supposed to look good sort of martial looking, to make them proud to be a soldier. their officers were also made to look much better in their uniforms for same effect.
