correct me if I'm wrong but aren't they canadians?

Well, let's see. There are only 2 leagues, National & American. Which would you suggest?

Actually in 1978 when they came into existance, it was decided that the American League would expand by 2 (Seattle was the other team). I'm sure the fact that Montreal was a NL team helped in the decision.

And they sucked for YEARS..........

They do play in North America, secondly the only other league they could be in is the national league which pertains to the US.

Furthermore, the Toronto Blue Jays are a team based out of Canada, but there aren't many Canadians in major league baseball to begin with let alone within the Blue Jays organization.

The majority of teams in major leage baseball are placed in divisions generally based on proximity to eachother. Toronto is close to New york, Boston and Baltimore. Hence why they were originally placed in the American Leagues East Division. On a side note they will also win this division next year if healthy.

because Montreal was in the national league and major league baseball though it would be good for the Canadian market if there was the possibility of a all Canadian world series.

They couldn't exactly be placed in the Federal League.

I mean look at Yukon playing in the Big East Conference.

and isn't the championship called the world series, even though only one continent is represented.
