Thatcher was annoyed that Kane was so different from him. Thatcher believed that Kane was purposely squandering the advantages and high position that had been given to him by his enormous fortune and privilged upbringing in the care of Thatcher. Thatcher though Kane should take a more active responsibilty in social causes, despite that Kane did do this just selfishly. Kane rebeled and made it a point to publicly smear and contradict everything Thatcher believed in or was a part of, even if Kane was part of the same thing he was bashing. For this and Kane's apparent lack of respect and appreciation, Thatcher despised Kane, but because Thatcher was a business man (and his relationship was obviously only business related with Kane after his disheartening experiences with Kane in his childhood) he was forced to maintain a dignified relationship with him even though he disliked him.
