I would say the place you can most see this in society would be in the area of Sport.
The idea of a positive mental attitude would revolve around that premise and could be related to the majority of top athletes.

I was watching TV earlier and just flicking as I was bored but I came across something on one of the science channels on SKY about overcoming phobias

The guy on there used pretty much that exact quote when coaxing this woman who was severely bothered by spiders. I remembered the quote coz I thought it was so true in every day life.

This woman wouldn't even go into a room where she had been told there was a tiny spider in a glass box.

All the way through the program he kept repeating and repeating the above getting her to believe in her ability to face the phobia (fear), and getting her closer and closer to the spider.

By the end of the program the above quote had become her mantra and she was happily holding and stoking a huge tarantula.

Self belief

Is this homework we're doing for you...? It has that homework smell about it.

From the second world war, there was a guy - wrote a book, 'Importance of Meaning', his name will return to me when I least expect it - he invented paradoxical intention. When he was scared of the guards, but had to do something brave, he'd go off into a corner and work himself into a blind panic, then sustain the panic for as long as he could.

And find that, like anything else, panic gets boring after a while - which is the exact point where you go off and do the brave thing.

Viktor Frankl. There you go.
