Happiness is the one thing we strive for.
Everything we do, every last thing we do, is for happiness.
People say love is the ultimate goal, but why do we want to be in love? So we can be happy. If a person could be truly happy on their own, wihtout all the drama of a second party, I'm sure they would be much more keen to do that. But they can't.
So naturally, its better to be lazy and happy than miserable.
Like I always say about my major (graphic arts): I may be poor for the rest of my life, but at least I'll be happy.

Great question. I have a few sources of insight for this one.
First, I went to military college for 3 years and was miserable. I thought that because it would be a great accomplishment that would open a lot of doors for me, I should stay and graduate and then spend 5 more (probably also miserable) years in the Army. Then I got in to a relationship with a guy who gave me the strength to leave. Now, even though I am struggling to go pay to go to school, I am much happier. I get to be with my friends and family again and I have a new job that I love.
The next thing actually comes from a college application essay I wrote. The essay asked me to write about my greatest accomplishment in life. I decided to write about an understanding I had come to...sort of an epiphany I had. I wrote about the way I have decided to live my life. I used to stress out alot b/c I thought I had to be the best at everything I did, from grades to sports to journalism to choir. And I did really well in everything but I wasn't all that happy. Then in college I realized that I was okay with just being okay at everything. I think that finding balance in life is what makes me happy. So maybe I don't have a 4.0 GPA, but that's ok b/c I use some of that time I would have to be studying to achieve a 4.0 to run, which I love and also helps me relieve stress. And maybe I'm not the fastest runner at the races I go to b/c I don't train relentlessly, but it's b/c I use some of my training time to spend with my nephew or my boyfriend or my friends.
So I think it is best to be happy trying just enough so that you're not miserable. Devote yourself to something at a level that allows you to not only enjoy that one thing, but to enjoy all the other things in life as well.

The best case senerio is doing your best in something that makes you happy. A job you love. A wife you love. Rasing the kids you love. Doing a hobby or sport you love. The thing is sometimes you have to try your best in things you don't love in order to get to doing the things you love. Things like school or starting at the bottom in a job to get to the top. Or middle if thats what you love to do.

What's the point in doing anything that makes you miserable? Being happy is always better.

I vote for happy not trying whatever "it" is.
Unless "it" involved the safety of loved ones, in which case I would do my best whatever the odds and misery, until safety was once again established.
