Two great singer/songwriters gone way before their time were Harry Chapin ("Taxi," "Cat's In The Cradle") and Jim Croce ("Bad Bad Leroy Brown", "Time In A Bottle").

Although as far as bands go, no band with as much potential had a more tragic history than Badfinger. Virtually every member of the band committed suicide only years apart from each other.

Jimi Hendrix. There are so many sad deaths other than John Lennon, like SRV, the three of the founding Ramones, George Harrison, etc., but Jimi Hendrix only had a four year long career, and achieved so much. In those four years, he rised to become the most acclaimed guitarist of all time, and his band one of the most acclaimed of all time. He could've done so much more, and yet he just died.

Mark Sandman died of a heart attack on stage in the middle of a performance. To me, that is infinitely more sad than most musicians' self-inflicted downfalls (intentional or otherwise).

Ian Curtis - Joy Division were only just beginning when he died, but they still managed to influence hundreds of bands since.

Or Buddy Holly or George Harrison or Jeff Buckley.

Another great Beatle George Harrison. No person even today, could have performed so graciously and helped so many people than George in the Concert for Bangladesh.
