okay, let me see.
first off, add the whole numbers to get 7.
secondly, find the least common multiple. In this case it is 24(hopefully you already learned GCF + LCM ).
Thirdly, change the denominator to the LCM, 24. So now what? Change the first terms you were trying to add into the new terms with 'like' denominators. SO, this means that 1/8 = 3/24, and 2/3 = 16/24 if you get my drift.
#4: OKAY, now we can finally add those pesky fractions. 3/24 + 16/24 = 19/24.
#5: Check and see if the fraction can be reduced. No. Okay then. NOW you can finally combine the whole number, 7, with the fraction, 19/24, to make the the final product and sum of the two fractions:

7 19/24 !

hope...that helped...

Convert the fractions to equal portions with a common denominator

5 2/3 ===> 5 16/24
2 1/8 ===> 2 3/24

So if you add those, you get 7 19/24

You need a common denominator.
Find the lowest common denominator.
In this case, it would be? think.....

did you get 24?
The easiest way to figure that out is use the multiplication table.

Is 8x1 divisible by 3? no.
8x2? no,
then you get 8x3.
Now multply 2/3 x 8/8 (or 1, just in fraction form)
what do you get?
now take 1/8 and multiply by 3/3.
what do you get?
add those two answers, add the 5, add the 2.
get it?
