Actually, the day that daylight will be equal (or almost equal) is on the 26th, a few days after the equinox. This is because of two main factors. One, sunrise is the moment the beginning of the Sun's disk appears above the horizon, and sunset is the moment the last of the Sun's disk disappears below the horizon, not mid-point to mid point. Second, due to refraction by the Earth's atmosphere, we actually see the Sun for a short time before (and after) it actually rises (and sets). This amount of time is added to the time of sunrise and sunset, thus it winds up being a few days after the Autumnal equinox that you get the day that has 12 hours of "day and night".

Check you weather section in the local newspaper, they should have the sunrise and sunset, as for when the times are equal, you need to remember even though the first day of autumn is this Sunday at 5:52 am EDT, the actual equal time may be a few days later than that.

On the first day of spring (sping equinox) and the first day of Fall (fall equinox). On these 2 days the suns direct rays are on the equater so the whole world has 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark.

She asked for day light and darkness.
