If you follows tabs from online where fans writes it for a song, they will mention where to put your capo on, and you just play whatever shape they write.

If the tab did not mention capo, then you don't need capo.

Capo is used to increase the key in which you play.
For example if you wants to play a higer D. Put your capo on fret 2, and play the chord E. It is actually a higher D. capo on fret 5, and to play a high D, you need to play the chord G.

How to know this, just refer to the guitar capo chord chart or something like that
http://www.start-playing-guitar.com/easy-guitar.html
Just scroll down until you see the chart. On the left is the chord sound you wants to play, the top is the fret where your capo is, and in the table you'll see the chord you need to play at those capo position.

But usually tabs will mention, Capo on what fret.
