The Avent worked well for my son...and I found them one of the most leak-proof.
Did you get one that has handles on one or both sides? I started my son with one of those...same result you got so I just put a little water in it and let him play with it (I picked a color I knew he found attractive...he had a thing for bright yellow). After a few days, he was pounding it on the floor and playing with it but still not drinking.
I remember trying something that might be a little odd but it got his attention at least. I made some sugar-free Kool-Aid (grape) and poured a cup for both of us (watered his down to make the color really "pop"...I gave him a taste of mine and once he discovered the sweetness, he wanted to drink out of it.
What I recommend is patience...let him play with the cup, offer it to him when he's snacking on cheerios (or whatever)...don't worry, he'll get the hang of it when he's ready!

I use the Playtex cup that has handles that come down the cup from the lid. It has the stopper so that liquid won't drip out. The sippy part of it is soft, almost like a teether. I got my son started by offering formula or water. (two tastes he was used to. water from mommy's water bottle) I held the cup for him kind of like a bottle until he sipped a little out and found out the surprise inside. Sometimes he will take it without fuss, others not so easy. He's 8 months now, and we started about 6 1/2 or 7 months. When I see that he's not really interested, I will just put water in it and let him hold the cup. Eventually everything in his hands goes to his mouth, so eventually he will drink from the cup. When he does it on his own, mommy jumps and clapps and sings hoorays!
Good luck to you, hope this helps.

Your little one is telling you he's not ready for the cup. He's fine with just breast milk and the sucking reflex will stay with him until he's 10 -12 months old. Usually, we try to introduce a cup at 8-9 months just for familiarity. Try giving him the sippy cup with just warm water in it as a toy when he's in the bath, so it doesn't make a mess, and he can experiment with it himself, as everything goes to the mouth anyway, and we want him to have the satisfaction of doing it himself. Be careful he doesn't choke, sucking and drinking are completely different skills. Babes need to suck the whole first year, bottles and pacifiers work too, when you need a break.
Also, he's developing an important reflex by turning his head to breastfeed which he won't do to drink from a cup. Don't be too eager to move on. Crawling is more important than walking early. Let him learn at his own pace. Good for you for letting him tell you, Good Mom!

I use the nubby sippy cups and I used to take the valve out of the sippy cup so that when my daughter tipped it she got whatever was inside. I'd hold the cup for her so it wouldn't make a mess. Once she started liking what was inside, like a week later I put the valve back in it so she's have to suck ... she got frustrated at first and then figured it out.
