Think Lavoisier instead of Newton for the approximate observation of conservation of mass. Mitosis doesn't violate it on any level. Compare it to tearing a piece of paper in half to form two pieces of paper.

no? matter isn't created during mitosis. the chromatids just move apart and gather together to form a nucleus. maybe the nuclear envelope thing? but i'm pretty sure that comes from the chromatids too.
