social scientists often try to apply numbers to non-numerical data, such as emotions or mental diseases to make it easier to compare them, but assigning numbers to non-numerical data is a tricky business and biases and such are often involved and may not represent "truth"

The scientific method could and should be applied to the social sciences. Atoms are an example. The notion of atoms was articulated about 2 thousand years ago. it was through research and a scientific method that were able to follow up find tests and evidence for this.

The scientific method though, is not foolproof. Each of us, when trying to prove ourselves right can also overlook information that would create a conflict or a paradox for the theory being postulated.

I propose that anyone fearful of using these scientific tools or empirical measurements is likely fearful that they could be proven wrong.
