I hear what you're saying. Personally, if I was "king of America", I would leave it up to the insurance companies rather than legislating seatbelt/helmet use through the government. If you get into an accident and you're injured because you didn't wear your seatbelt or helmet, then just let them jack up your insurance rates nice and high. It would pretty much guarantee that people would use their seatbelts/helmets because not doing so could hit them big-time in the wallet, while at the same time it would preserve individual choice by keeping the nanny state and the cops out of our personal lives.

If it only endangered and affected the person not wearing it, I am all for it. Let's chlorinate that gene pool!
But it does endanger and affect others, whether you choose to admit it or not. Seat belts also help keep a driver behind the wheel and able to reach the steering wheel during extreme maneuvers. This directly affects the safety and lives of anyone else in the vehicle OR IN ANY VEHICLE ANYWHERE NEAR IT. If you want to kill yourself, go ahead, but I would really prefer that you not do it by running into me or my daughter and grandchildren. Nor do I think I should have to pay extra for insurance to keep people like you on life support because you probably won't have enough of that to pay for care of a major head injury either.

It's all about the Benjamins. You can endanger yourself all you want as long as it doesn't cost other people money.
Unfortunately, seat belts don't just save lives, they save money too. When people have really ugly accidents without seatbelts on, their hospital bills are higher and the settlements for pain and suffering are higher...
All this makes insurance cost more and they figured out that insurance rates would go down if they could make everybody wear the seatbelt prisoner strap thingies.
Unfortunately America has become "Land of the Free as Long as it Doesn't Cost Me Anything."
If you didn't already figure it out, I'm all for freedom and choosing to die by flying out my windshield as opposed to dying because I'm trapped in my submerged car and I can't get my seatbelt off.

A good lot of people who are grievously injured in accidents in which they might have only sustained minor injuries had they been wearing their seatbelts end up in the hospital as indigents, meaning I have to pay their hospital bills along with my own when I need health care.
Everyone is clamoring for socialized medicine when seatbelt use is one very good way to get medical costs down.
Also, studies have shown... (and I hate that statement because I can't seem to remember any of them specifically, but I know them to be in existence,) that people who are wearing their seatbelts while driving have better control of their cars.
Plus, if there's a proven safety device right there at your fingertips and you're stupid enough not to use it, you're stupid enough to deserve a ticket.
With your logic, we should legalize meth as well. The user is the only one hurt by it.

It's a good question. I have driven through seat belt checkpoints at the Illinois and North Carolina borders, where the troopers just waved over car after car where folks didn't have seat belts.
Personally, I have always worn a seat belt, but I find it ridiculous to pull someone over for not wearing one.
It's even more ridiculous in states like Oklahoma where you have to wear a seat belt, but a guy on a motorcycle doesn't have to wear a helmet. So tell me again the law is about safety???
The seat belt legislation is just another reason for a trooper to pull over someone and initiate a vehicle search. If they wanted to search motorcycles....they'd find a suitable citation to make it easier.
Just my opinion...

Okay, first off, it isn't some goverment conspiracy to take hold on peoples lives. That's just ridiculous. It's just a safety procaution. They don't want people dying left and right from motor vehicles accidents that they could of prevented just by wearing a seat belt.
It's your choice to wear the seat belt or not, it's just if you get caught without it you're going to pay the price.
Whether it's with a ticket or death.
It's about keeping YOU safe.
Not about the goverment trying to infringe on your life.

Because most of our states have a mandatory seat belt law. If you don't buckle up you are breaking the law. Yah, it's okay if they want to die, but what if they aren't successful and the accident results in them being an invalid/disabled and the have to be taken care of by the State for the rest of their lives.

Not just myself. If I'm not strapped in, I could endanger the lives of three children in the car with me. Also, they coud be without a mother for the rest of their lives. It's not just about me.
