Looking at some of the nonsensical trash that is poured forth as "entertainment" the answer has to be an emphatic yes.
What totally amazes me is that certain sections of society are totally addicted to such rubbish as Big Brother. I watched the first five minutes of the very first programme and switched it off after realising it had absolutely no entertainment or educational value whatsoever.
If more members of the public took the same stance television companies would be required to introduce new programming containing at least a smattering of intelligence.

Nah. 99% aren't but about 90% of the shows that are most popular are unintelligent (e.g. mass amounts of reality shows out there on channels such as VH1 and MTV). Look at a show like Arrested Development or Curb Your Enthusiasm. Both are thoroughly intelligent and hysterical shows, yet they only gather very small view bases on the premises that people don't want to think about what they're watching. It's a sad, sad thing.

You are not taking into account the Internet factor.
The Internet has changed the entire TV trend,.
People are reading much more now than they have before via the Internet, sharing information and expanding their awareness.
And with forums such as these, commoners get to correspond in a less fanciful way of expressive writing.
It's not that things are getting worse, things are just changing.
Sure there are stupid people, there always was and there always will be.
However, I would argue that people are much more literate and generally smarter now than they ever were before.
Or at the very least they are the same. We just trade one skill for another.

No, television doesn't make people stupid but people who spend ALL their free time watching TV are making a stupid choice. TV has plenty of programming which can help to educate them; history channel, Fox news, National Geographic, sports channels, etc. You can learn to do things by watching different shows, educate yourself about political situations, watch court TV and see news and how the courts work when trying a case; learn to repair and decorate your home. TV has a purpose and it is a good thing but, not to the exclusion of every other means of communication. Reading is a good thing; going out and doing physical activities and seeing sights are also productive. Having interaction with other people is something that is good to do and a helpful means for establishing friendships and communications. Some people are not able to leave their homes due to illness, age, or disabilities of one sort or another. TV is a means to see things they would not be able to see otherwise. Little children need to do activities and learn to read, write and see different people; enjoy outdoor playtime; they should not be sitting in front of TV all day (some use TV as a babysitter, which is really bad for the child). In conclusion, I feel as if TV has a purpose and it serves many needs but should not be the only means of communication. It does not make people stupid but, it can limit their ability to do other things and broaden their horizons if they watch TV to the exclusion of all other things.

Good article. I just think children aren't as ambitious as they used to be. Our youth are so focused on TV, video games, computers, and being "socialites" that attention to school and the world around them doesn't seem all that important. I highly doubt you'll be seeing many renaissance men coming from this generation. Children don't have the time or the devotion to reach such a level any more.

I think that it does. Because it distracts you from the important issues in your life and country. And television celebrates this, by creating stupid shows like BIG BROTHER, SURVIVOR OR DANCING WITH THE STARS. It shows things that had already happened not what you need to do to improve your life. Although there might be two or three programs that might be the exception.

Depend what they watch.
Informative documentaries and factual programmes can be educational, inspiring and thought provoking.
"Chewing gum for the mind" such as Big Brother, X Factor, Jezza Kyle and various other crappy "chat" shows and reality TV where has-beens and wannabes bid for their 15 mins is the equivalent of putting your brain in a food processor and blending it into mush. If you have a brain in the first place that is.

Television does not make people stupid. It is the people choosing to watch TV and the programs they choose that make them stupid. I'm guilty of it myself. We each have the power to turn it off or to turn on something more thought-provoking.
