Blown saves, losses, can't find the plate. The Red Sox gave up young lefthander Kason Gabbard for a bill of goods.

There is no good reason. They got him to make the bullpen even better, and he has been awful.

There's a term in organizational behavior--escalation of commitment--that refers to the desire to keep spending money on a bad investment in the unlikely hope that it will turn around. The Red Sox will do much better by not escalating their commitment to Gagne. He may be good again, but it's not going to happen on the Red Sox this year. They need to find team chemistry and let Okajima be the sole setup man at this point.

By the way, I like Gagne. I just think that he was overused and will never be the closer he once was. Anyone old enough to remember Bill Campbell (of the Sox in the late 70s) will know exactly what I mean.

His track record as a closer when he's healthy is fantastic. He may be doing poorly lately, but unlike an unknown commodity we know what he is capable of and there is a chance he will regain his old form.

He is a stud pitcher who needs time to build back confidence. On of top 5 closers of all time. Do not forget that.

The dRed Sox made a deal and now they have to eat it. They cannot just boot him to the curb.

Great! Another reason why they will be crushed by the Yankees if they even get to face them in the playoffs...

He's needed for the rest of the year and he can assist them in the playoffs
