The REAL answer to this question lies in how well you know your boyfriend .. his interests, his hobbies, his activities (including school) and what he does in his free time.
I know that for my own Boyfriend's Christmas Gift -- it is going to be a gift certificate for Art Supplies (Canvas, Oils, Pencils, Sketchpads, whatever) ... because ... as a Artist (and he is quite good) ... he could really use a stock of these items and he DOES appreciate the thought (including getting with the gift certificate ink for his printers!).
So DO look at his interests, and come up with something from them that he could definitely use or needs ....

go to gifts.com
click on "personality" then whatever age group he fits in with.
then take the short quiz about him.
you'll have pages and pages of ideas to choose from.
