"You're So Vain" is a song written and performed by Carly Simon in 1972.

The song is a sarcastic profile of a self-absorbed lover. The song was a number-one hit (it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in early 1973, and also spent two weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart, her first #1 song on either chart), and spawned what many fans consider to be the biggest musical mystery of the era. There has been much debate over who exactly the song is about. Popular guesses on the subject include Mick Jagger (who sang uncredited backing vocals on the song), Cat Stevens, Warren Beatty, Kris Kristofferson (with whom she had had brief relationships), unfaithful fiancé William Donaldson, and Simon's ex-husband, James Taylor.

For the record, Simon acknowledges the song is a little about Beatty; it's a composite of three men from her L.A. days. Warren, it seems, was not a particularly good boyfriend.

the most popular guess 30 years ago when the song was first heard on the radio was Paul McCartney -- also in contention were : James Taylor (Carly Simon's husband at the time), Warren Beaty, Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens -- all guys she had dated over the years......
no one really knows because she would never tell.....

Carly Simon has never revealed who she is singing about in that song. I think she's basically said it's about many of the men she dated up till then (Mick Jagger, James Taylor, etc), and just kind of mixed it up.

It's like the true identity of Mr. Duplicity in Alanis Morrisette's You Oughta Know (although it's rumored that one is Dave Coullier of Full House), it's never been confirmed.

They say this song is about James Taylor..but, when I was a kid .. I was at Saratoga..the horse races and Carly was there and the guy she was dating was not James Taylor.. he was a dude they called Taylor so not sure-- the dude owned race horses.. since the Saratoga reference was in the song..and they were both there:)
He was tall with sandy colored hair and I do think that his horse won that day.
