The number is (c) 5.

With algebra, you make x the unknown.
Thus, 1 + 5x = 26.

Subtracting 1 from both sides,
5x = 25
x = 5.

A prealgebraic way to solve the problem is to plug in each number.

subtract 1 from 26 then divide by 5. The formula is (n-1)/x where "x" is the multiplier and "n" is the result. Try it...If 37 is one more than 6 times a number, what is the number? The answer for this would be 6.

1+5n=26 solve for in so...-1 from 1 and 26 making it 5n=25 and divide 5n=25 by 5 both sides cancel 5n divided by 5 and 25/5=5 so ur answer is n=5

so what you need to do is turn it into an equation and solve for the number

5x+1+26...solve for x

subtract 1 from both sides and then divide by 5

2007-09-18 14:44:50 · answer #4 · answered by scorpion14 2 · 1 0

1+5x=26

"more than" = add
"times" = multiply
"a number" = variable (it can be any letter you want it to be)
"is" = equals

Subtract the one on both(what you do to one side you have to do to the other) sides so that the variable is left alone. Then divide by five so that "x" is by itself. Make sure you divide by five on the other side of the equal sign too.

Hope this helps :)

it'd be (c)-- 5
5 x 5 = 25, and that 25 + 1 = 26

look at it like this: 5x + 1 = 26 (x being the answer you want to find out)
5x= -1 + 26
5x = 25
x = 5

5x+1=26

when ever you see the word "is" thats where the equal sign goes

more is +

The other answers can work too but another way u can write it is 2 (2s+2). If u distribute that it comes out to 4s+4.
