DO NOT MAKE ANY MORE ATTEMPTS TO REMOVE IT.
it will lock in the lock postion and you can't turn it back on this makes for a more VERY MUCH more costly Repair .
the problem more than likely that the Tumblers have jammed and you need a Key Cylinder . at this point the repair is simple as long as the key will turn to the start position
if it won't then disassmbly of the Theft and lock sectors will have to be done this is why you STOP trying to get the key out. see your local Independent repair shop

It is most likely that the solenoid that allows the final movement of the key is not working because the shifter switch won't make contact. What I would try to do is turn it back to ignition run and use the shifter and keep retrying until it goes all the way. The shifter switch is usually in the shifter assembly.

This is a common problem. Its the shift assembly that needs to be changed. I've changed them a few times. The HHR has the same problem. But for now look under the steering column you'll see a 1inX1in square access that you can remove with a small screwdriver by prying off. Once it's off, stick your finger in there staight up and feel for a small button. Push it in and then you can turn the key off. you can do this until you get it repaired and it wont kill the battery.

I have also had that happen. A combination of turning the locking the steering wheel and key to the accessories position and back always unsticks the key.

your shifter park switch not making contact or your park shifter
solenoid quit working. you probably have to replace the whole shifter assembly.
