Mine is Joseph and his Brothers by Thomas Mann because it has something interesting to think about on every page, and although it's set in ancient times, the thoughts and emotions and spirits of the characters are so clearly and realistically imagined. And it has a beautiful theme.
The novel I'm reading now is The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr by E.T.A. Hoffman - it's not very well known, but anyone who likes cats I'm sure would love this! It's very funny and kind of satirical and unusual, half of it is as if written by the tomcat, and he has a lot of smart things to say, just as you would expect, if you know a tomcat yourself.

My Top Picks of ALL Time:
-- The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
-- Other Voices, Other Rooms by Truman Capote
-- Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
(I know I'm forgetting more but each of these are pretty amazing!)

Can I list a few? Two? I hope?
"Grendel" by John Gardner (incredible Beowulf tale from the other side)
"A Book Dragon" by Donn Kushner (equally incredible tale of how dragons lived and what they mean to the universe, with real and detailed historical fact woven into the story of a long life.)
thx ;-}

Swan Song by Robert McCammon... the government causes the end of the world, and this book is about the people who are left and what happens to them. It's really amazing.

I prefer Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand...i suggest all young minds should read this if they can concentrate long enough (quite a long one). It is also political and also shows the downfall of government...stressing the individual achiever as most important!

Ooh, I have about three favorites. They are:
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens
I have tried, and don't think I can pick which is my favorite. I love them all.
