And when I tried to do this the ladies at the office told me that I could no longer make a name change through the Social Security office because the laws have changed and that was a while back ago. I wanted to go back to my Maiden name. I'm now thinking that this might not be the truth and that I can still make a name change through the Social Security Office. Can you please tell me if I can or not? Thanks a lot and God Bless.

It is according to what state you live in, most states require that you go to court to change your name legally before you can change it at the Social Security Office.

You have to make your name change at the Social Security office. That is the only way you can change it.

According to SS, you can make a legal name change within 2 years of the event that authorized the new name (divorce, marriage) with just the legal document. After 2 years, they can do it but will require additional information. Most likely a recent drivers license, passport or something. What I did was first I got it changed at the DMV. They let me changed it after I got my divorce. i had to show them my divorce decree. after I change it at the "state" level, i tooked the changed license to the "goverment level", Social Security Office. They did not give me any problems and it was changed back to my maiden name.
