Did you break the lever off or did it feel like it may have come loose? if it feels loose take the screws out of the cover plate and take a look, you may be able to reconnect it,if it was broke off you may be able to replace it yourself.if it was my tub i would take a look at the very least to try and fix it myself, you can find a plumbing supply co in the phone book call and ask for a little help,i would do this before calling a plumber, what can it hurt?

I own a small business doing bathroom renovations. It sounds like all you need is a new spout. The old one will come off in one of two ways: 1) it simply twists off, or; 2) there will be an Allen key set screw underneath -- just loosen the set screw, and slip the spout off. Once you have it off, take it to Home Depot, or wherever, and you can buy a new one,no problem. Should cost under $20 for a typical diverter spout. Best of luck.

Unscrew it counterclockwise and take the whole fawcet off. go to hardware or home store and ask the old guy to fix it if not ask for a replacement, you have to put pipe putty on the threads before you screw it back on, if you need to use a pipewrench put a heavy rag on it first not to scratch it.
Better yet call local vo tech and ask plumbing instructor to have students help you, give them a couple dollars each, if you make it worse a plumber will love you
Best bet is ask a plumber or 2 for a written estimate and make sure an estimate is free
