Usually a tape measure in English (not metric) units has marks at 16" intervals. This indicates the most commonly used spacing from center to center for wall stud framing.

If by "shed wood" you mean fire wood it is mesured by the cord. And a cord of wood measures 4 feet x 4 feet x 8 feet.

the inch is broken down to 1/16th increments......every tiny line is an 16th.......there are also 1/8"...and also 1/4"...and 1/2"
