Let the width of the court be w feet
therefore,the length is w+48 ft.
According to the problem,
2(w+w+48)=272
2(2w+48)=272
2w+48=272/2=136
2w=136-48=88
w=88/2=44
Therefpre,the width of the court=44 ft
Length of the court=44+48=92 ft

Let x = length, x - 48 = width

Find the length:
2(x + x - 48) = 272
2(2x - 48) = 272
4x - 96 = 272
4x = 368
x = 92

Find the width:
= 92 - 48
= 44

Answer: length is 92 feet, width is 44 feet

Proof (perimeter is 272 feet):
= 2(92 + 44)
= 2 * 136
= 272

perimeter = 272
width = x
length = x + 48

P = 2(length) + 2w, plug in what you know
272 = 2(x + 48) + 2x, distribute the 2
272 = 2x + 96 + 2x, simplify
272 = 4x + 96, subtract 96
176 = 4x, divide by 4
44 = x

width = 44 feet
length = 44 + 48 = 92 feet

RE:
If the perimeter of a basketball court is 272 feet and the length is 48 feet longer than the width,?
then what are the length and width of the court?

let the width be w
length = w + 48

perimeter = w + w + 48 + w + w + 48 = 272

4w = 176
w = 44, length = 92

P=2L+2W
W=L-48
Subtituting the value of W and solving for L: 272=2L + 2(L-48)
2L+2L-96=272
4L=272 +96
L=368/4
L=92 feet
Checking for answers: 272=2(92) + 2(44) =272 okay!

solving for W: W=L-48 = 44 feet

P =( x+y) * 2
and y= x +48

272 = (x+x+48) *2
2x + 48 = 136
2x= 88
x=44 feet
y = x+48 = 44+48 = 92 feet
y = 92 feet

let the width be x
then the length will be x+48
so 2(x+x+48) =272
solve this equation
so x is 44
the length is 92

2007-09-18 14:09:47 · answer #8 · answered by Xituo 1 · 0 0

L = W + 48
272 = 2W + 2W + 96
4W = 176
W = 44 ft
L = 92 ft

2l + 2w = 272
l= 48+ w

2( 48 + w) + 2w = 272
96 + 2w + 2w = 272
4w = 176
w= 44
l = 92
