I own a 96 pontiac sunfire SE with the 2.4. I have a manual transmission. It has 160,000 miles on it. I have kept it up as it breaks down and tuned it up as needed, well just recently I ran into a problem with it skipping, so i replaced the spark plugs, the coil pak, the spark plug boots, AND cleaned the throttle body. Well, it ran ok for a while until recently... When i start it it runs fine, but when i get it up to temperature, leave it in 5th gear and give it any more than a quarter throttle, it skips at random (My friend described it as my car hickuping). Now to stump you... it runs fine when i get it above 3000RPM's (so why don't I just shift it down... REFER TO MILEAGE) so I don't have a clue... PLEASE HELP and i think i need to clean my EGR Valve, that is what my local mechanic (gpa) says is the problem but i think otherwise and neither of us have ever cleaned an EGR Valve so please explain....
Thanx

Lots of answers here.

Iwould not blame the egr valve. It only affects your engine at idle or very low speeds. It may need to be cleaned if you have idle problem.
I would look at the (tps) throttle position sensor, located on the throttle body. With that high mileage I would suspect it. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem

Unbolt it and remove it. Clean it with a carburetor spray cleaner. I lot of the times, it is the DPFE sensor that goes bad. Get one from a NAPA parts store and replace it, if the EGR is still giving you an alarm after you cleaned it.

Try BG44K, Chevron Teck Ron or Sea Foam. Follow instructions, works wonders.
