I inhaled this black smoke accidentaly and it made me cough like something ive never experienced before.

You smelled the sulfur dioxide produced by the oxidation reaction generating the heat. The black smoke was from incomplete combustion of the other materials, including the wood. The two are quite separate. You can verify this by comparing the smell of the match to the smell of burning pure sulfur.
