Can't they be used for stem cell research or donated to science.

With both my children I donated the placenta/cord blood for research and to use with sick children/adults.. I had the same "case worker" for my second child who remembered me and said my donation was able to cure/help 15 people of various illnesses... Which is a really good feeling.. Also, if necessary my samples are tagged/ID's so if me or my children ever need a sample I can get my own... There's also no fee for doing this or any type of payment..

You can bank the stem cell in case your child or future children need it. They are now trying to encourage people to just donate it and hopefully if you ever need it there will be a close match. We chose to pay and bank it, on the "what if" chance. I do think that people should be encouraged to donate, if every one did it, there would be enough stored up for use by those that need it. If you think about blood banks...you don't pay for that!
Sorry, I went off on a tangent. I do not know where unused placentas and cords go. I guess its just medical waste and its incenarated.
I wondered this about my gallbladder.

At first I read this I was like "um on the floor!" Ok now seriously, I never thought about it. I know that you can get stem cells from the umbilical cord but never thought about the placenta. I am not sure it would be of any use, I saw it, it just looks like a huge goober of blood and tissue. I would ask your doctor if you can donate it somewhere.

In Australia you can donate your cord blood, where it is used for transfusions and research. You can also pay to store it should you or your family need it in the future. I donated the cord blood for my first pregnancy and intend to do the same with this one. I'm sure that most big hospitals have similar programs.

Not usually, although if you're interested in that you could inquire. Cord blood banking is available from several companies.

Typically in the hospital they are disposed of as medical waste. My sons were born at home, and we buried each of their placentas in the backyard.

the blood in the umbilical cords can be donated for research and so on, but it a process, other wise the after birth is basically "thrown" away in a bio waist container!

They go into the biohazard and then they are picked up by a company and burned.

I'm sure they can be. You have to speak to your Dr. about it and come up with an arrangement.
