what do you think of report that girls are starting periods as early as 7? Avg has decreased years recently?

I agree with the response about 7 being sign of an endocrine problem.

Ignoring the 7-year-old ... a few things can contribute to earlier onset of puberty. The childhood obesity rate is way up. Body fat plays a role in estrogen, so may play a role in accelerating puberty. Also, there is concern over the hormone levels in milk. I don't think that has been proven, though.

Menarche (the onset of periods) at age seven is classified as precocious puberty. Such a child should have an endocrine evaluation. The average age of menarche in the US is about 12.5 years with slight adjustments for race. This is about two years earlier than girls born in the early decades of the 20th century, but only about nine months earlier than girls born in the 1960's.

We know that girls who have early onset of menses have a greater chance of being obese in adult life. Obesity probably plays a role in early puberty. The relationship is currently being intensively investigated.

sb...I had just turned 9 when I had gotten mine...menopause started in my 30's...heard of a neighborgirl whom was around 8 when she started...so, that has been happening for years, although 7 still seems young.
