Connecting rods I assume? If you have two bad connecting rods I'd swap the motor out for a rebuild. The rods themselves are like $35-65 each assuming you can break a set or only want two. Most people would recommend you replace them as a set off four (4 banger), six (V-6 or inline 6, or eight (V-8).

If this was recomended I'd go all the way with an engine swap. The problem is that if you spun a rod bearing there's bearing material in the oil channels in the block and the crankshaft journals will be damaged and need to be resurfaced by a machine shop. The reason for most spun rod bearings is low oil pressure and the bearing is worn down past spec's and it either slips or it grabs the crankshaft journal due to inadequate lubrication from the low oil pressure. Low oil pressure is cause by worn main and rod crankshaft bearings and cylinder bore wear and tear. (It's all connected)

If they are just talking about two of the push rods (from the lifters to the rocker arms) then these are dirt cheap but are typically sold as a set, again.

As far as cost, the labor will kill you since the engine has to come out to do connecting rods. At least eight hours labor is average but if they do it properly they'd send it off to a machine shop. Machine shop fees will be around $550.

If it were just two push rods then they'd only have to pull the intake manifold and valve covers. This might be a six hour job if they pull all the push rods and lifters out and replace them.

I'd do a swap and drop and have a whole new engine with a decent warranty unless this is what they are doing. The only hitch is if the engine isn't rebuildable due to massive interanl damage. Then you'd have to buy a rebuilt engine with no rebuildable core. You are looking at around $2,000 minimum either way.

Clear as mud? LOL!!!

Good Luck!

It is being torn down so do the entire job--if 2 rods are bad, you got a car that was beaten and probably needs everything done. Spend a little more and have a real healthy engine--if not you will only tear it down again in 2 months--more money wasted. Or if you think about it--a Jasper replacement is an all new motor with a 3 year warranty for a little more than the job you are having done. One day and you are driving in a car with a new engine...price it out and think about it.

Honestly this will vary depending on several issues

Are you providing the overhaul kit?
Are you going to rebuild the engine block, which if your going that far your better off.
Exactly what are you going to have the shop do for you?
Make sure to have the engine block checked for cracks, etc. Well worth the cost and you probably should have the freeze plugs changed and all the galleys checked, etc.

Decide what you want to do and get several quotes from two or three different shops in your area. You might actually want to consider a Reman engine or a box crate motor...

Cheaper to get you another engine at a salvage yard for around $750. You better make sure your crank shaft is not out of round or the rods wont stay in. Depends on the damage done and who your having do it as to the cost. If your worried about getting ripped off you probably are.

If the engine is out your looking at 75-100 dollars if its in the car it could be more than twice that amount.I would suggest maybe you do it yourself its not that hard and you will feel a lot better about doing it yourself.Rebuilt my first engine at 19 and have done six more since that time and saved thousands of dollars doing all my mechanic work.Just make sure you have a Chilton's manual.Good luck what ever you decide to do.
