5x+7= 3x-5

what you have to do is determine "like terms." one way to think about like terms is by saying you have apples and oranges. consider the numbers in this problem to be apples. and the numbers that are followed by an "x" to be oranges. you have to add and subtract them separately. you can't put apples and oranges together.

so you take away 3x from both sides of the equation (because if you do something to one side of a seesaw or scale you must do it to the other side to keep it even, or equal):
5x - 3x + 7 = 3x - 5 - 3x, which gives
2x + 7 = - 5
next, add the five to both sides:
2x + 7 + 5 = -5 + 5, which gives
2x + 12 = 0

from here you want to isolate the x; get the x by itself on one side of the equals sign.

so subtract 12 from both sides.

2x +12 - 12 = -12

so 2x = -12

if 2x = -12 how do we find just x?

all you have to do is do one operation (be it division, multiplication) to BOTH sides - remember to keep the seesaw/scale even - that will leave you with just x = to something.

5x + 7 = 3x - 5; first get all the x's on one side, It is easier to bring the 3x to the 5x to keep x positive. So subtract 3x from both sides.

2x + 7 = -5, now subtract 7 from both sides
2x = -12, divide by 2
x = -6
