m = (2 - 7) / (5 - 4)
m = - 5
y - 2 = (-5) (x - 5)
y = (- 5) x + 27

First, you have to assume (if you haven't been told) that are considering the equation of a straight line.

Two of the points on this straight line have coordinates (x=4, y=7) and (x=5, y=2).

The gradient (m) of the line (its steepness) is how much y changes per unit of x. That is:

m = (7-2)/(4-5) = 5/-1 = -5

Note here that the gradient is negative and is sloping downward from left to right.

Now we know m = (y1 - y2)/(x1 - x2). So pick one of the points, say (4,7) and let x1=4 and y1=7. That gives:

-5 = (7- y)/(4 - x)

-5(4 - x) = 7 - y

7 - y = -20 + 5x

y = -5x +20 +7

y = -5x + 27

Compare this to the equation of a straight line:

y = mx + c where m is the gradient and c is the intercept of the straight line on the y axis. So your answer in y intercept form is:

y = -5x + 27

The gradient is -5. The y intercept is y = 27(which occurs at x = 0 of course).

Slope intercept form-- y=mx+b

To be able to do this, you will need the slope (m) and the y-intercept (b).

First find the slope by using the fomula: change in y over change in x. So, (7-2) over (4-5). The slope (m) will be -5.

Next, to find the y-intercept, plug in everything into the slope-intercept equasion and solve for b.

1) Pick one set of points to plug in (either (4,7) or (5,2)

2) Plug in for y, x, and m

3) Solve for b

ex)
7=(-5)(4)+b
7=-20+b
27=b

Now, plug in the slope and y-intercept to get your answer--

y= -5x+27

Hope this made sense...and helps!

find the slope, change in y over the change in x

2 - 7 = -5
5 - 4 = 1

slope is -5/1 or just -5

y = -5x + b

now we need the y-intercept which is letter b.

We have two points that have to work in the equation, so pick one plug it in for x and y and solve for b.

(4, 7)
y = -5x + b
7 = -5(4) + b
7 = -20 + b
27 = b

So .. y = -5x + 27

if you check the other point works in our equation
y = -5x + 27, if x = 5 then the answer should be 2
y = -5(5) + 27
y = -25 + 27
y = 2
the other point was (5, 2)

First you use the slope formula to find the slope (y2-y1/x2-x1)

2-7/5-4= -5 = slope (m)

then plug it into the point slope form y-y1=m(x-x1)

y-7=-5(x-4)
y-7=-5x+20
y=-5x+27

Hope tht helps =D
