This is a good question. Years ago I took a graduate level philosophy class in "the mind-body problem" and this was one of the questions we talked about. The professor did not think it would be possible for the mind to function without input from the body. I was convinced.

Thoughts are alot more than what you describe. These are only partial thoughts. What is essential to thought is not visual imagery or the senses but language.

If we could only grunt and groan, that would be the extent of our thinking. We would have no words to express ideas and concepts. I don't think in images, I think in words. My memories are based on linguistic definitions and descriptions about what may have happened in the past.

Pain is, by the way, largely a linguistic feature. How does any of us express the feeling of a pain.

that's a good point! BUT i think you'd still be able to think, but you'd have no way of getting out what you're trying to say. like a child who stutters. they've got all of these brilliant ideas, but they can't share them, and sometimes come across as dumb, when they're actually very intelligent.
