It would be in the 5th century.
Since there was no year # zero, it goes like this:
1-100 = 1st
101-200 =2nd
201-300 = 3rd
301-400= 4th
401-500=5th
and so on. That's why the 1900s were the 20th century, and the 2000s are the 21st!
(And "the new millennium did NOT begin when the calendar flipped from 1999 - 2000... it began on Jan 1, 2001, at least by the commonly used Gregorian calendar.)

It is in the first century. Year zero to 100 is the first century.
Year 100 to 200 is the second century. and so on. (yr 200 to 300 is the 3rd, 300 to 400 is 4th 400 to 500 is 5th... so year 500 is NOT IN THE THIRD CENTURY. It's in the 5th or the beginning of the 6th.

The year 500AD is in the 5th Century.
The year 501AD then becomes the 6th Century.
There is no year 0. One Century = 100 years so therefore years 1 to 100 is in the 1st Century.
I hope that helps clarify things.
