if this is true, wow..

Superman's return from death is explained by the Phantom Stranger in a stand-alone issue.[citation needed] As a Kryptonian, Superman's alien genetic material enables him to absorb sunlight and perform superhuman feats. Superman survived his death by entering into a hibernation-like state, and the Eradicator's use of him as a 'conduit' by which he could absorb solar energy 'restarted' Superman's body.

Superman has since come to realize that his death may never come. Several stories depict alternate futures in which he survives for hundreds of years due to his Kryptonian genetic make-up

To put it in easy to understand terms. Superman was resurrected by Kryptonian technology and the fact that he was not truely dead but in a healing trance (coma) so deep he appeared dead to all Earth technologies.

None of the four 'alternates' was the real superman. Superboy was a clone that had some of his DNA and someone else's. Steel was John Henry irons; he was the only one who admitted that he was not the real one. The Last Son of Kryypton (or Strange Visitor, whatever he was called) was the Eradicator in human form, with energy powers. And the Cyborg was really Hank Henshaw in disguise, he was a former astronaut who got irradiated (sort of like what if Reed Richards was a bad guy.)

The only reason they were able to get away with claiming that any of them were the real superman was because his robots stole his body and took it back to his antarctic fortress, where it regenerated when exposed to concentrated solar radiation or Kryptonian radiation or something like that. When he recovered, he was very weak. it took quite a long time for his powers to recover, so basically he had to use a Kryptonian warsuit to walk across the ocean underwater to get back to Metropolis. If I recall correctlly, part of the 1980's revamp was that the powers were not natural, but part of an upgraded version of the warsuit (sort of like the warsuit without the suit part) that was bioengineered into Krytponians in the prenatal stage. And there was something about them not being able to leave Krypton, which was disabled so that Kal El could be sent off. Anyhow, he came back and whooped butt on the Cyborg and Mongul.

Hmmm...you know, I can't remember how they actually brought him back.

After his death, DC waited a few months and introduced 4 new "Superman" comics, all with vastly different Supermen. I remember two of them were Superboy and Steel, but I don't remember the other two. The idea was to put them all out there and declare the most popular one the new Superman (the "throw **** on the wall and see what sticks" philosophy).

Unfortunately for DC, after several months, none of them had really taken off, so they brought the original back. But I don't remember how.
